The accent on the city and county of Denver, Colorado is mountains. The Front Range of the Rocky Mountains dominate the city view to the west. Interstate-25 (north-south) and Interstate-70 (east-west) intersect in Denver. Interstate-70 to the west is the gateway to the ski resorts of Loveland, Breckenridge, Keystone, and Copper Mountain in Summit County and to Vail just up the road. The city of Denver is home to over 500,000 people and was founded as a city during the gold rush in 1858. Denver is the capitol of the state of Colorado. Many people refer to Denver as the Mile-High City because of the designated elevation above sea level at 5,280 feet. The counties surrounding Denver are Jefferson, Adams, and Arapahoe. The Denver city park system has over two hundred area parks. The largest park of 315 acres is City Park. Both the Denver Zoo and the Colorado Museum of Nature & Science are part of City Park. The Denver Zoo is open 365 days a year and has over 4,000 animals. The Colorado Museum of Nature & Science was founded with the Edwin Carter nature collection donated from Breckenridge, Colorado in 1900. The museum is also the location of Denver’s Imax Theater and the Planetarium. Union Station at 1701 Wynkoop Street is the hub of Denver’s developing light-rail and mass transit system. Amtrak’s California Zephyr train and the Ski Train to the Winter Park Ski Resort operate from Union Station. The gold domed State Capitol building and the government Civic Park center, and the 16th Street Mall are all located downtown. The 16th Street Mall near Union Station was finished in 1982. The Daniels and Fisher Tower on the mall is listed in the National Register of Historic Places and was opened in 1910. The Denver Art Museum has over 356,000 square feet between several buildings. The Byers-Evans Museum, located on 1310 Bannock Street, is so named because the two owners were William Byers in 1883 and William Evans in 1889. The Colorado History Museum on 1300 Broadway in Denver was built in 1977. The Denver Aquarium on 700 Water Street is near the Children’s Museum. The new Denver central library building was opened in 1995 at the cost of ninety-one million dollars. Denver is home to the Denver Broncos football team at Invesco Field at Mile High. Invesco Field can seat nearly 75,000. The Colorado Rockies baseball team play at Coors Field. Coors Field can seat over 50,000 people. The Pepsi Center Arena is home for the NBA Denver Nuggets. The Pepsi Center is an entertainment complex that opened in 1999. Celine Dion was the first performing concert act.
